Rock, Rock, Who’s Got
the Rock Lesson Plan

  • Empathy

  • Integrity

  • Sensitivity to Others

  • Honesty

  • Positive Self-Esteem

The students will work on empathy and sensitivity to others by passing the rock to a variety of people and not just their friends. Students will work on positive self esteem by understanding they may or may not get the rock when they want it. They will take turns being the guesser(s).

S.T.A.R. Options:

Class Clap, counting, and rhythms. Teacher or one student lead. When the whole class sounds as one, try tow, then three, etc…

Math Counting (Multiples) Partner Counting. Clapping as a group to desired number. Add a partner and alternate count. Change partners.

Play + Connect Activity

Players should form a large circle. One player will be the guesser and should leave the play area for a moment. A small rock is passed around the circle. Players should cup their hands so the rock cannot be seen while it is being passed. The guesser returns to the circle. Players continue to pass the rock. Some players should also pretend to pass it. The guesser must determine who actually has the rock. If the guesser is correct, the person holding the rock becomes the new guesser. The guesser has three chances to guess correctly.

Breathing Exercise Options:

Belly Breathing

5 belly breaths with mouth closed and hands on belly. Goal is to get students to breathe through nose and use their diaphragm. There should be very little movement of the chest and the belly should move in and out. Can do several rounds of this activity.

Accordion Breathing

5 belly breaths with mouth closed and hands on sides of lower ribs. Goal is to get students to breathe through nose and use their diaphragm. There should be very little movement of the chest and the students should feel movement outward on the inhale. Can do several rounds of this activity.

Learn + Grow Activity

Instead of passing a “rock” pass a rolled up pieces of paper with tasks on them. If you get caught with the paper then you need to do the task like name a predator and its prey. If you are the last one with the paper when time is called you also will need to do the task.

Reflect Activity

How did you make sure everyone was included? What do you do when something is difficult to figure out?

Variations

Add more than one rock or preferred object. Challenge guesser to find all the objects without a miss.
