Sensitivity to Others
The students will show sensitivity to others by respecting each other’s space as they move around the room. The students will show integrity, adaptability, and honesty by following the rules of the game and the variations as the game is played.
S.T.A.R. Options:
Class Clap, counting, and rhythms. Teacher or one student lead. When the whole class sounds as one, try tow, then three, etc…
Math Counting (Multiples) Partner Counting. Clapping as a group to desired number. Add a partner and alternate count. Change partners.
Play + Connect Activity
The rules of this game are simple: The leader calls out a color and a body part. Example: “Pink pinky.” Players must then find an object of the same color in the play area and touch it (in this example, with their pinky finger). The leader continues to call out colors and body parts. This is a good activity to get players moving around the play area. To make this activity into a challenge, players who are last to find and touch an object should sit down. The last player standing can call out colors the next round.
Breathing Exercise Options:
Belly Breathing
5 belly breaths with mouth closed and hands on belly. Goal is to get students to breathe through nose and use their diaphragm. There should be very little movement of the chest and the belly should move in and out. Can do several rounds of this activity.
Accordion Breathing
5 belly breaths with mouth closed and hands on sides of lower ribs. Goal is to get students to breathe through nose and use their diaphragm. There should be very little movement of the chest and the students should feel movement outward on the inhale. Can do several rounds of this activity.
Learn + Grow Activity
Could post things around the room so they need to find a shape, color, letter, number, or some other academic topic. Put words up with certain number of letters or beginning letter sounds. Ask students to find a number that is 4 plus 2 or use subtraction.
Reflect Activity
Could you move around the room and respect each other’s space? What did you do if someone already had their elbow on an object you wanted?
Variations
No two people can be at the same object. Try a different locomotor movement to the next call.
