Numbers and Names Lesson Plan

  • Listening

  • Adaptability

  • Interpersonal Communication

  • Sensitivity to Others

The students will work on listening by waiting quietly until it is their turn. The students will learn communication by reacting quickly to their turn and coming up with ways to adapt to make the group successful. Students will come up with ways to support others and allowing others to make mistakes.

S.T.A.R. Options:

Class Clap, counting, and rhythms. Teacher or one student lead. When the whole class sounds as one, try tow, then three, etc…

Math Counting (Multiples) Partner Counting. Clapping as a group to desired number. Add a partner and alternate count. Change partners.

Play + Connect Activity

Players count off around the circle until everyone has a number. Then one player starts by saying someone else’s number. Without hesitating, the player whose number was called says someone else’s number. This continues until a player hesitates. Then the game starts over. Young children can use names instead of numbers.

VARIATION: To add a little excitement to this game, the player who hesitates when it’s their turn could be required to jump up and down or spin in a circle. This game can be played in a line instead of a circle.

Breathing Exercise Options:

Belly Breathing

5 belly breaths with mouth closed and hands on belly. Goal is to get students to breathe through nose and use their diaphragm. There should be very little movement of the chest and the belly should move in and out. Can do several rounds of this activity.

Accordion Breathing

5 belly breaths with mouth closed and hands on sides of lower ribs. Goal is to get students to breathe through nose and use their diaphragm. There should be very little movement of the chest and the students should feel movement outward on the inhale. Can do several rounds of this activity.

Learn + Grow Activity

Have the students use multiples instead of just counting. May want to create circles of 7-12 to make this easier. You can even have the students try to go in order at first.

Reflect Activity

How does focus help with success? Can you listen to others when it is not your turn? How can we encourage our classmates?

Variations

As a group...See how many we can get through before hesitation or fault.
