Sensitivity to Others
The students will practice sensitivity to others by grabbing their finger firmly, but with care. The students will adapt and practice interpersonal communication by sensing and feeling the comfortability of touching someone’s hand.
S.T.A.R. Options:
Class Clap, counting, and rhythms. Teacher or one student lead. When the whole class sounds as one, try tow, then three, etc…
Math Counting (Multiples) Partner Counting. Clapping as a group to desired number. Add a partner and alternate count. Change partners.
Play + Connect Activity
All players should stand in a circle. As leader, tell the players to raise their right hand, palm up. Next, players should put their pointer finger of their left hand in the palm of the person to their left. When the leader says, “Go!” players must try to catch their neighbor’s finger in their right palm without letting their left finger get caught. Try this activity a few times and then switch hands. Then switch positions in the circle.
Breathing Exercise Options:
Belly Breathing
5 belly breaths with mouth closed and hands on belly. Goal is to get students to breathe through nose and use their diaphragm. There should be very little movement of the chest and the belly should move in and out. Can do several rounds of this activity.
Accordion Breathing
5 belly breaths with mouth closed and hands on sides of lower ribs. Goal is to get students to breathe through nose and use their diaphragm. There should be very little movement of the chest and the students should feel movement outward on the inhale. Can do several rounds of this activity.
Learn + Grow Activity
You can create some quick math situations by calculating how many fingers were caught and this will make a fraction. Add up different rounds or subtract different rounds. Have the group that had their finger caught say the alphabet or name a vowel, etc.
Reflect Activity
Were you able to catch the finger of the person next to you? How does it feel to be successful or unsuccessful? How do you feel when it will be time to pull your finger?
Variations
Switch hands...Opposite direction. try with partners only.
