The students will work on honesty and listening by moving only when it is their turn. They will show adaptability and empathy by accepting the role assigned and respecting other’s space.
S.T.A.R. Options:
Class Clap, counting, and rhythms. Teacher or one student lead. When the whole class sounds as one, try tow, then three, etc…
Math Counting (Multiples) Partner Counting. Clapping as a group to desired number. Add a partner and alternate count. Change partners.
Play + Connect Activity
This game is a fun twist on musical chairs. Players should divide into 3 groups, each group will be a different fruit. Example: apples, grapefruits, kiwis. Players sit in chairs in a circle. One player stands in the middle of the circle; this player will be the caller. When the leader says, “Go,” the player in the middle should call out one of the three types of fruit. Example: “Apples!” In this example, the players from the apple group (including the middle person) must then change seats as quickly as possible. The person “out” becomes the next caller. If the caller says, “fruit basket!” all players must change seats.
Breathing Exercise Options:
Belly Breathing
5 belly breaths with mouth closed and hands on belly. Goal is to get students to breathe through nose and use their diaphragm. There should be very little movement of the chest and the belly should move in and out. Can do several rounds of this activity.
Accordion Breathing
5 belly breaths with mouth closed and hands on sides of lower ribs. Goal is to get students to breathe through nose and use their diaphragm. There should be very little movement of the chest and the students should feel movement outward on the inhale. Can do several rounds of this activity.
Learn + Grow Activity
Instead of being a fruit, students could be a certain shape, number, color, words working on in the classroom, or any other topic. When the leader holds up a certain shape or gives a simple math problem and your number is the answer then you move.
Reflect Activity
Did you move only when your fruit was called? How does it feel when someone gets more chances than you do?
Variations
Try without chairs. Use the corner’s of the room to decipher position.
